About and Narrative

Welcome to the Instruments of Africa and the African Diaspora: A Digital Archive! This archive was made as a repository for instruments across the continent as well as their impact and legacies across the world, largely in the Americas. There are so many more artifacts that can and should be added, but each instrument gives you a journey through its origins as well as videos representing the lived cultures of each instrument in the diaspora. Hope you enjoy!

This website serves as a gateway to a world where rhythm, melody, and history intertwine, offering a journey through the diverse musical heritage of Africa and the African diaspora.

I chose to divide my cite into four categories: the drum, the harp, the lamellaphone, and the banjo. Each site I provide descriptions, photographs, and audiovisual recordings of the instruments and their adaptations throughout Africa and the Americas to give a full experience of instruments largely unknown to many.

In addition to the exploration of musical instruments and genres, I also wanted to shed light on the individuals who have shaped this musical legacy. Through the videos, visitors can learn about iconic figures such as Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley, whose groundbreaking contributions have transcended borders and inspired generations of artists.

Lastly, I wanted to highlight the historical significance of the African diaspora and its music which represents the struggles of those that came before me. I hoped to encourage others to confront the complex legacies of slavery, colonialism, and cultural exchange that have shaped the music we know today

In conclusion, “Instruments of African Diaspora” is more than just a website; it is a virtual journey through rhythms and melodies that have shaped the cultural landscape of the African diaspora
